Amel Tafsout Seminar

Algerian AMEL TAFSOUT is an amazing woman. Director of her Maghreb dance company “The Tafsoutettes”, she has lectured, danced, taught, sung, and conducted anthropological research all over the world; in the UK alone, she has performed at Womad, Glastonbury, The ICA, The Commonwealth Institute, The French Institute, Queen Elizabeth Hall, The South Bank, The Barbican, SOAS and The British Museum. She speaks four languages and has published articles in academic and popular magazines.

Tafsout was fascinated by dance from childhood. Much of her research has focused on ritual and traditional dances from the Maghreb and the Middle East (the dual North African- Arabic personality of Algeria). She has been able to look at the ways in which spirituality is part of daily life, and her work is characterised by a search for harmony between body, mind and spirit.

“Watching a performance by AMEL TAFSOUT is a cathartic experience. She dances from the very core of herself. Sensuality is expressed as power and generosity. She has a direct stare, a presence that only comes from the true knowledge of herself and her art. A unique performer and there is no one else who dances like her.” (Beatrice Parvin, in Habibi Magazine, Vol.18, #1, 1999). She is a wonderful, caring and meticulous teacher … I could go on & on …. DON”T MISS OUT!
