Raqs Sharqi (Bellydance) History & Culture Lecture

Where does this dance come from? How long has it been around? Who are the main pioneers that helped shape this beautiful art form? Dance legend Morocco answers these questions plus a lot more.

What: Deepen your practice and understanding of bellydance with this 17 hr training. This course is ideal for serious students, current and aspiring teachers. Participants who pass the written and practical exam will be awarded a Bellyqueen Teacher Training certificate.

The Bellyqueen 2014 Teacher Training will be conducted by Bellyqueen director, Kaeshi Chai, anatomy expert, Lissa Michalak and dance legend, Morocco.

Kaeshi Chai co-founded Bellyqueen, PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) and is a principal dancer with Bellydance Evolution. She has performed and taught all over the world and is an alumni member of the Bellydance Superstars. She has danced with Natacha Atlas, at BAM, Summerstage, and on the TV shows, Conan O’Brian and Blue Peter. She has hosted Tamaly’s Dallal’s Teachers Training for over a decade in NYC, is a 200 hr yoga certified instructor through Yogaworks and has undergone intensives through ACHPER (Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation), AFAA (Aerobic & Fitness Association of America), SEEDs (Self Esteem and Empowerment through Dance) with Myra Krien, Dancing through Pregnancy, Dances of Oneness with Banefsheh Sayyad, Sacred Circle Dance with Laura Shannon, People’s Improv Theater, ATS with Carolena Nericcio, Level 1 training with Suhaila Salimpour and is currently undergoing RMT (Robbins-Madanes Training) to become a life coach.www.kaeshi.com

Morocco is considered a leader in the field of Middle Eastern dance, is an internationally renown dancer, instructor and author. Since 1964, Morocco has written for several publications in her field and been reprinted in dance, medical and feminist publications internationally. A true pioneer in the field, she taught a 3-credit course in Middle Eastern Dance & Culture at the State Univerity of New York (Purchase, NY) in the mid 1970s. Her recently published 424-page reference book, “You Asked Aunt Rocky: Answers & Advice About RaqsSharqi & Raqs Shaabi” has received numerous 5-star reviews and is fast becoming the go-to book in the field. Lissa Michalak has been teaching movement for more than 23 years and is a confirmed anatomy nerd. She is a Middle Eastern dancer and is certified in both mat and equipment through IM=X Pilates, Pilates Institute of America, and the Kane School of Core Integration. I only (& rarely) produce seminars by other teachers if I respect what they are doing and believe in their expertise. Those who have taken these seminars have been lavish in their praise of my guest teachers.

Over the years we have had many fine teachers of Egyptian style come to NYC, but as yet nobody who really knows Lebanese Raqs Sharqi from the inside.

Born in Basra, and adopted by the Lebanese, Iraqi dancer Samara was one of Beirut’s hottest stars of her time. She was a glamorous icon of her day and even though she has stopped performing, she is still popular.
Graceful, feminine and innovative, Leila grew up admiring Samara’s performances. She will be sharing some of her signature technique and combinations that made Samara so popular.

Levantine Cane Dance Choreography (3 hours)
Sunday, May 11 from noon – 3:30 (two 15-minute breaks)
(this timing leaves the rest of Sunday for celebrating Mother’s Day!)

Incorporating elements of oriental, bedouin and folkloric styles, this fun choreography provides an equally lively alternative to Egyptian cane dance. Please bring a cane.

For the fourth time, Leila Molaei, a native and expert on Iraqi dances and a lover of Lebanese folklore, will be teaching another series of workshops in New York.

Leila will once more be teaching Raqs Kawlee on Monday – this class is ideal if you are either new to this style or want a refresher (new material). You will cover dagger work, hair tosses and head spinning, as well basic technique and combinations. Leila will support this with information on musical interpretation, improvisation and choreography.

This workshop is the perfect introduction to Iraqi gypsy style or to solidify your technique.

What to bring/wear/prepare:
– Comfortable clothing, minimal jewellery
– Dance shoes – bare feet for Monday’s Ghajari only.
– Hip scarves are optional
– Note pad/pen

For Monday’s Raqs Kawlee/ Ghajari:
– Hair down, and if possible, straightened
– Hair extensions are great if you want to feel/see the real effect of hair tossing
– Two butter/plastic knives (Monday’s Ghajari only)
– Refreshments

About Leila Molaei
With her Arab/Iranian roots from the Persian Gulf (Al Ahwaz), Leila Molaei has been internationally performing and training students in Arabic dance since 2005. Based in the United Kingdom, she runs Layali Academy, one of the busiest Arabic dance schools in London covering the dances of Iraq, Iran, the Persian Gulf, Egypt and the Levant.

One of only a few natives of Iraqi, Arabian Gulf and Iranian dances outside the Middle East, and popular in the Arab community, Leila has taught and performed various high profile clients around the world, including the Bellydance Superstars at Raqs Britannia, Sheraton Hotels and the Destinations Show at Earls Court.

The Soul of Oriental Dance: Joana Saahirah, Dancer, Teacher and Choreographer of Egyptian Oriental and Folkloric Dances, Actress and Author

After almost a decade of performing in Egypt with her own orchestra – Joana Saahirah has created a style of teaching, choreographing and performing that combines the best of Egypt and the best of  the West: technique, expression and Art.

She has also studied and worked (as a choreography and teaching assistant) to Master Mahmoud Reda from whom she learned his Theater Folklore styles.

Joana’s dream & mission is to share the soul of Oriental Dance and Egyptian Folklore with the world, revealing the true richness and ancient knowledge hidden in this art form. She has been invited to teach and perform all over the world & this will be her first time teaching in New York & the US.

Joana has written several articles for newspapers and magazines (about Egyptian culture, music & dance) & 2 books about The Magic of Egyptian Oriental Dance and her Paths of Discovery in the Land of the Pyramids. You absolutely must come to this amazing 4-day Symposium on Middle Eastern Culture (Dance & Music) from December 4-7, 2014 in the gorgeous city of Prague (Czech Republic).

I will be delivering 3 papers & teaching a seminar on Finger Cymbal Technique. Brad MacDonald aka BradMack has been playing darbuka since 1999 and music professionally since 2007. He is featured on two CDs, The Middle East Side and The Silent D with his NY-based band, Djinn and he performs regularly with the Turkish fusion band, Carmine & Friends.
